Vitamin D Deficiency: Signs, Causes, and When to Get Your Levels Checked

Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin,” yet a surprising number of people don’t get enough of it. It does far more than protect your bones — it supports immunity, muscle function, and even mood — but deficiency frequently goes unnoticed because the symptoms are so easy to dismiss. Understanding how vitamin D works, why running low is so common, and how it’s measured can help you take charge of your long-term health.

What Vitamin D Actually Does

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, the minerals that keep bones and teeth strong. Beyond the skeleton, it plays a part in muscle performance, immune defence, and the nervous system. Your skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, and smaller amounts come from foods such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy.

Why Deficiency Is So Common

Modern life quietly works against healthy vitamin D levels. Long hours indoors, extensive use of sunscreen, air pollution, and clothing that covers the skin all reduce how much sunlight your body can convert. Diet rarely fills the gap, since few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D. People who live in cities, work night shifts, or spend most of the day inside are especially prone to running low.

Common Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of low vitamin D are subtle and easy to blame on a busy schedule or poor sleep. Watch for:

  • Persistent tiredness or low energy

  • Aching bones, joints, or muscles

  • Frequent colds and infections

  • Low mood or trouble concentrating

  • Hair thinning

  • Slow wound healing

Because these signs are non-specific, deficiency is often overlooked until it has been present for some time.

Who Is Most at Risk

Some people are more likely to be deficient than others — including older adults, people with darker skin tones, those who are overweight, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone with digestive conditions that affect nutrient absorption. If you fall into one of these groups, it’s worth paying closer attention to your levels.

How Vitamin D Deficiency Is Diagnosed

The only reliable way to know your status is a blood test. A simple 25-hydroxy vitamin D test measures the main circulating form of the vitamin and is the standard used by doctors worldwide. Results are usually reported in nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL): below 20 ng/mL generally indicates deficiency, 20–30 ng/mL suggests insufficiency, and 30 ng/mL or above is considered adequate for most adults. Since symptoms alone can’t confirm a deficiency, testing removes the guesswork.

What to Do If Your Levels Are Low

If a test confirms you’re deficient, the good news is that it’s usually straightforward to correct. Sensible sun exposure, vitamin D-rich foods, and supplements — taken under medical guidance and at the right dose — can bring levels back to normal over a few months. Retesting afterwards helps confirm that the approach is working.

Making It Part of Routine Care

Vitamin D is rarely checked in isolation. It’s often included alongside other markers in a routine preventive health check-up, which can flag early signs of deficiency and related issues before they cause problems. For anyone with ongoing fatigue or known risk factors, folding a vitamin D check into a regular health review is a simple, proactive step.

The Bottom Line

Vitamin D deficiency is common, easy to overlook, and simple to treat once identified. If you’ve been feeling persistently tired or achy, or you belong to a higher-risk group, a quick blood test can give you a clear answer. Always discuss your results and any supplementation with a qualified healthcare professional.
