Tiredness is so common that most people treat it as an unavoidable feature of modern life. But when fatigue is persistent, out of proportion to your activity, and paired with paleness or breathlessness, there may be a specific, treatable cause behind it: anaemia. One of the most widespread conditions in the world, anaemia is also one of the most overlooked — partly because its symptoms creep up slowly, and partly because they are so easy to attribute to a hectic schedule.
Anaemia means your blood carries less oxygen than it should. That happens when you have too few red blood cells, or when those cells contain too little haemoglobin — the iron-rich protein that binds oxygen and ferries it around the body. When oxygen delivery drops, everything from your muscles to your brain has to work harder, which is why the hallmark symptom is a deep, persistent tiredness that rest does not fully fix. Anaemia is not a single disease but a sign that something else is going on, and identifying the underlying cause is the whole point of testing.
There are many types of anaemia, but a handful account for most cases:
Iron deficiency — by far the most common, caused by low intake, poor absorption, or blood loss (including heavy periods)
Vitamin deficiencies — particularly vitamin B12 and folate, which are needed to make healthy red cells
Chronic conditions — long-term illness, inflammation or kidney disease can suppress red cell production
Blood loss — obvious or hidden, such as from the digestive tract
Inherited conditions — such as thalassaemia, which affect haemoglobin
Because the treatments differ completely, pinning down which type you have matters enormously — and that is where blood testing comes in.
Anaemia tends to develop gradually, so the body adapts and the signs are easy to normalise. Watch for:
Persistent tiredness and low energy
Paleness, especially of the skin, lips or inner eyelids
Breathlessness on mild exertion, like climbing stairs
A fast or pounding heartbeat
Dizziness or headaches
Cold hands and feet
Brittle nails or unusual cravings, such as for ice
Individually these are easy to dismiss. Together — and especially if they have been building for weeks — they are a clear cue to get checked.
Women with heavy menstrual periods
Pregnant women, whose iron needs rise sharply
Growing children and adolescents
Vegetarians and vegans, if iron and B12 intake is not managed
People with digestive conditions that impair absorption
Anyone with a chronic illness
Because the symptoms are so general, diagnosis relies on a couple of straightforward blood tests. The starting point is almost always a complete blood count, which measures your haemoglobin level and the number, size and appearance of your red blood cells. This single test confirms whether anaemia is present and offers strong clues about its type — for instance, unusually small red cells point toward iron deficiency.
To confirm the cause, doctors often add a marker of your iron stores. A ferritin test measures the protein that stores iron in the body and is the most sensitive early indicator of iron deficiency — it can reveal depleted stores even before haemoglobin falls. Together, these tests answer two questions: whether you are anaemic, and why. Depending on the results, further checks for B12, folate or other causes may follow.
The right treatment depends entirely on the cause, which is exactly why testing matters before acting. Iron-deficiency anaemia usually responds to iron-rich foods and, where needed, iron supplements — though these should be guided by test results, since unnecessary iron can cause its own problems. Vitamin-related anaemia is corrected with B12 or folate. Where anaemia stems from an underlying condition or ongoing blood loss, treating that root cause is essential. In most cases, once the reason is identified, the fix is effective and the energy returns.
There is no need to soldier on through unexplained exhaustion. A check is worth considering if you are persistently tired, look pale, feel breathless on light activity, or fall into a higher-risk group — particularly women with heavy periods and anyone following a restricted diet. Because the tests are simple and the common causes are very treatable, confirming or ruling out anaemia is one of the more rewarding health checks you can do.
It is tempting to reach for an over-the-counter iron supplement the moment fatigue strikes, but this is worth resisting until you know your numbers. Taking iron you do not need can cause constipation and stomach upset, and in some conditions excess iron is actively harmful. Because several very different problems can cause anaemia, treating blindly may mask the real issue or delay the right diagnosis. A quick test first ensures the treatment matches the cause rather than working against it.
Pregnancy deserves a special mention, because iron demands rise sharply to support both mother and baby, and anaemia is common as a result. Left unaddressed, it can affect energy and recovery and, in more significant cases, the pregnancy itself. This is why iron levels are routinely monitored during antenatal care, and why any tiredness beyond the ordinary is worth mentioning to your doctor rather than accepting it as simply part of being pregnant.
Anaemia is common, easy to miss, and usually very treatable — which makes it worth taking seriously rather than pushing through. Its symptoms masquerade as ordinary tiredness, so the condition often goes unrecognised for months. A pair of simple blood tests can confirm whether low oxygen-carrying capacity is behind how you feel, and identify the cause so it can be corrected at the source. If persistent fatigue has become your normal, it is worth finding out whether your blood is quietly telling you something.
