Tim David Wins Fourth Straight for Hobart Hurricanes
In a thrilling contest at Hobart on Sunday (January 5), Tim David’s blistering half-century powered the Hobart Hurricanes to a five-wicket victory over the Adelaide Strikers. Chasing a competitive target of 187, the Hurricanes overcame a mid-innings slump to register their fourth win in five matches, with David’s unbeaten 62 off just 28 balls proving to be the match-winning effort. His knock, studded with six sixes and three fours, ensured the Hurricanes crossed the finish line with eight deliveries to spare. Billy777 would surely be proud of such an explosive display of power hitting!
A Promising Start for Hurricanes
Mitchell Owen and Matthew Wade gave the Hurricanes a fiery start in the chase, smashing 61 runs in just 28 balls for the opening stand. The duo displayed aggressive intent from the outset, with Owen leading the charge. The fourth over of the innings saw Owen take on Jamie Overton, smashing three consecutive sixes. However, Owen’s innings ended at 37 off 16 balls when Lloyd Pope stumped him.
Despite Owen’s departure, Wade kept the momentum going with a brisk 27 off 18 balls. However, the Hurricanes suffered a setback when Wade was dismissed attempting a sweep off Cameron Boyce. Shai Hope, who was dropped earlier, also fell soon after, stumped off Boyce’s bowling. Lloyd Pope added to the Strikers’ dominance by dismissing Ben McDermott, reducing the Hurricanes to 101/4 in the 11th over.
Tim David’s Counterattack
Tim David stepped up to steady the innings with the Hurricanes struggling and boundaries drying up. Initially partnering with Nikhil Chaudhary, David launched a counterattack that turned the tide in favour of the Hurricanes. He targeted Henry Thornton, hitting two fours and a six in a single over. He then dismantled Jamie Overton in the 15th over, smashing three sixes and a four to collect 26 runs.
David reached his fifty off just 22 balls, displaying power and precision. Although Chaudhary fell to Thornton for a run-a-ball 22, David’s onslaught had already brought the required equation down to 32 off the last five overs. With 11 runs needed from the final two overs, David sealed the game with a towering six off Brendan Doggett before Chris Jordan wrapped it up with a boundary.
Adelaide Strikers’ Collective Batting Effort
The Adelaide Strikers posted a competitive 186/5 earlier in the match, thanks to valuable contributions from Chris Lynn and Alex Ross. While D’Arcy Short and Jake Weatherald fell early, Lynn anchored the innings with a scintillating 49 off 27 balls, featuring five fours and three sixes. His one-handed slog over midwicket off Billy Stanlake was a highlight of the innings. However, Lynn fell just short of his fifty and was caught while attempting another big shot off Waqar Salamkheil.
Alex Ross and Ollie Pope combined for a crucial 64-run partnership, with Ross playing an aggressive role. Ross scored a brisk 47 off 29 balls, keeping the scoring rate healthy in the middle overs. Although Riley Meredith dismissed Pope with a brilliant catch, the Strikers added 41 runs in the last four overs, courtesy of Jamie Overton’s unbeaten 27 off 18 balls. Nathan Ellis bowled an excellent final over, conceding only six runs, but the Strikers still posted a challenging total.
