Elden Ring requires skill, luck and runes in equal parts to make any meaningful progress in its vast world. Yet some of its most useful systems - specifically Great Runes - may prove confusing at times.
Dropped from defeated mainline bosses, these items offer massive buffs for one life. But how can you locate and recover them?
What are Runes?
Elden Ring Runes are one of the primary currencies in this game, used to upgrade weapons and gear, purchase items, and level up characters. Bosses typically reward players with runes as rewards; however, Great Runes provide even greater boosts.
Attaining a Great elden ring runes requires beating a Sharbearer demigod in one of the large legacy dungeons across Lands Between. Once defeated, players will gain their great rune and can then visit any divine tower to activate it for optimal use; each active Great Rune grants unique boosting abilities for gameplay.
How do I get Runes?
Elden ring runes can be obtained in various ways: defeating enemies in the open world or progressing through the main story and defeating bosses that offer thousands or tens of thousands of Runes upon death; they can also be earned by completing NPC side quests and exploring off the beaten path locations.
One of the best early-game Rune farming spots can be found in Southern Caelid at Warmaster's Shack Site of Grace, where players can engage in fights against Troll warriors that are easy to kill compared to Elden Ring standards and drop hundreds of Runes per kill. Players may also gain Runes through fighting the demi-gods at Divine Towers; however, risks increase greatly here; it is recommended that they have someone help when fighting them, or use summoning classes when doing so. Later parts of the game offer additional Rune farms; for instance at Mohgwyn Palace there's Palace you may also find higher-level Rune farms which is worth exploring as it's very simple!
